In the contemporary digital era, the internet defines human experience. Artworks in Photo Op reflect and materialize the internet as an autonomous entity, incomprehensible in scale, complete with its own wants and desires. A user pulling up any popular web platform encounters a demand: What’s happening? What’s on your mind? or simply a blinking cursor in a search bar. The internet begs for contributions, the most popular of which are images. Photo Op examines how the digital age transforms art, making exhibitions into photo opportunities.
Cait Finley, Rebecca Forstater, Mirra Goldfrad, Aysha Hamouda, and Amanda Struver are artists based variously in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Syracuse, and Pittsburgh. Working in video, sculpture, and mixed media installation, all five artists have exhibited throughout the United States and abroad.
Photo Op is curated by members of the Allegheny College Student Art Society (SAS): Gene Frank, Claire Klima, Zoe Konzel, Justin Leary-Bignayan, Kate Lyon, Silas Morrow, Damaris Shamberger, and Adrean Velez.
