Introduction to Watercolor Painting

Beginner and intermediate painters will begin exploring the fun and challenging world of watercolors. Many techniques will be introduced and several paintings will be completed.

Advanced Watercolor

This class is tailored for students who have mastered the basic techniques of watercolor. Many advanced techniques will be tried such as collage, dyeing, abstraction, etc. and various styles will be explored and discussed to help identify the artist’s personal style.

Found Objects Jewelry Making

Learn how to create beautiful jewelry designs using old or broken jewelry you have sitting in your jewelry boxes at home.  Participants will spend the day disassembling and reassembling vintage or unusable jewelry into amazing masterpieces!  You will also be given the opportunity to incorporate beads and everyday household items such as photographs, silverware, buttons and fabric into spectacular creations.  If you would like, bring your favorite pliers, beads and your grandmothers old costume jewelry but don’t worry, there will be plenty of extra supplies available as well. Don’t forget to bring a lunch or you can order out from one of the restaurants near by.

Pre-K and Kindergarten Art, Music and Movement Class

The Theme for this 6-week course will be “Under the Sea”.  Preschool and Kindergarten students will learn all about the fascinating creatures living in our oceans and will then create some beautiful art work representing what they learned.  Students will also participate in some fun and exciting games, songs and dances!

Music classes will be held in the Gardner Theater on the second floor of the Meadville Market House.

Try an Instrument

No experience required! Participants will be given the opportunity to try a different instrument each week including ukulele, dulcimer, harmonica and percussion. The fifth week will bring all the instruments together for a jam session prior to the May Acoustic Jam where participants are invited to attend and show off their newfound talents.  5 or more students required.

Youth Jazz Initiative

Experienced high school-aged musicians interested in developing their jazz skills are invited to attend a 10-Week jazz workshop.  Some topics covered are jazz history, definitions, scales (major, blues, be-bop 7th/mixolydian), forms/playing through changes, soloing, stage procedure and conduct, musicianship/ear training, reading, transposing, intonation, composition, mastery/command of instrument and of course techniques on improvising. At the conclusion of the class, students are invited to participate in the next scheduled Jazz Jam.  Students will need to bring their own instruments. 5-15 students required.

Speech Songs

This music therapy group is designed for participants with difficulty using expressive language. This class will focus on building breath control, vocalization exercises, vowel and beginning consonant production while incorporating use of sign language, PECs or facilitated communication as needed. Participants will sing, play instruments and communicate choices for musical interventions.  5-8 Participants are required.

Therapeutic Percussion Jam

Help connect mind and body as they learn to entrain to individual beats as well as that of the group. Hand drumming, small percussion and body percussion will all be used to encourage socialization, communication, focus and cognitive skills. Participants will explore their own natural pulse, as well as learn beats for different musical styles in order to build sounds to create songs. (Ages 13+) No prior experience is required! (Max of 10 participants; must have 5 for class to run)
